Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Reports 99.8% Pure Iodine from Mueller Process, Field Pilot Testing Imminent

Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has announced significant progress in its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, reporting successful laboratory results with iodine purity of 99.8% and overall recovery exceeding 90%. This development marks a critical step in the company's strategy to establish a domestic supply of iodine for the North American radiology contrast media market, while offering oil and gas producers a new avenue to derive value from produced brine.

The Mueller process, which is patent-pending, is designed to recover high-purity iodine from iodine-rich oilfield brine. According to the company, recent laboratory work has validated the process under controlled conditions, producing clean brine suitable for disposal or reinjection, aligning with zero-liquid-discharge objectives. A mobile field-capable pilot unit, sized to treat up to 80,000 liters per day, has been constructed and is slated to begin field testing in the coming weeks, with operations planned for September 2026.

Key achievements highlighted by the company include the production of 99.8% pure iodine, overall recovery greater than 90%, continuous operation using real oilfield brine feed, and the generation of clean brine compatible with existing disposal infrastructure. These results have supported the completion of a preliminary design basis for a 200 metric ton per year plant and provided techno-economic validation, indicating a low operating cost and environmental footprint.

The field pilot testing is expected to provide operational data under real-world conditions, informing the design of modular, relocatable production units. Voyageur's modular concept envisions deploying 200 tonne/year field units at multiple saltwater disposal sites, where iodine concentrate is produced and transported to a central hub for final polishing, prilling, and packaging. Engineering and project planning are progressing, with a focus on finalizing process systems for iodine polishing and packaging, and advancing through front-end loading stages to refine cost estimates and commercial deployment plans.

For oil and gas operators and produced water midstream companies, produced brine represents a substantial untapped resource. Billions of barrels are handled and disposed of annually at significant cost, yet only a small fraction of the iodine they contain is recovered. Voyageur aims to be the first to change this equation, building what it believes will be the first economically profitable, field-proven iodine extraction process. This initiative supports the broader industry's movement toward brine valorization.

Voyageur's vertically integrated strategy seeks to improve supply-chain security, reduce reliance on imported raw materials, and lower operating costs for producing medical imaging contrast agents. Iodine is a critical raw material in iodinated contrast media, and the Mueller process is a key component of this strategy. Brent Willis, President and CEO of Voyageur, stated, "Achieving 99.8% purity and greater than 90% recovery in laboratory testing using real oilfield brine provides meaningful technical validation as we prepare for field pilot operations. This work supports our broader strategy of building a secure, vertically integrated supply chain for radiology drugs."

As part of its long-term manufacturing strategy, Voyageur plans to develop iodine production capacity of up to 1,000 tonnes per year to support its future iodine-based contrast pharmaceutical production requirements. The company will provide further updates as field testing begins and additional technical milestones are achieved.
