As temperatures fall and a forecasted winter storm moves closer, UGI is reminding everyone to take precautions to stay safe and to protect your family and home. The natural gas and electric utility company, which serves more than 760,000 customers, emphasizes the importance of energy safety during extreme weather conditions.
UGI recommends that customers ensure their heating systems are operating efficiently and safely. This includes having a professional inspect furnaces, boilers, and other heating equipment. Additionally, customers should check for any gas leaks by smelling for the distinctive odor of natural gas, listening for a hissing sound, or looking for signs of a leak such as dead vegetation near gas lines.
For those using space heaters, it is crucial to keep them at least three feet away from flammable materials such as curtains, bedding, and furniture. Never use a stove or oven to heat your home, as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed and tested regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.
UGI also advises customers to prepare for potential power outages by having a supply of flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, and water on hand. If using a generator, it must be operated outdoors and away from windows, doors, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Never refuel a generator while it is running or hot.
Customers are encouraged to report any gas odor or suspected leak immediately by leaving the area and calling UGI's emergency number at 1-800-276-2722. For more information on winter storm preparedness and energy safety, visit UGI's website.
