UGI Urges Cold Safety and Scam Awareness Amid Record Low Temperatures

As extreme cold persists and record low temperatures are forecast for later this week, UGI Utilities is reminding customers to prioritize safety and be vigilant against scams. The natural gas and electric utility, which serves more than 760,000 customers, is offering cold-weather safety tips and alerting the public to potential fraudulent activities that often increase during severe weather events.

To protect against the cold, UGI recommends keeping homes heated to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent pipes from freezing. Customers should also ensure carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly and know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, which include headache, dizziness, and nausea. If a detector sounds or symptoms appear, leave the home immediately and call 911. Additionally, UGI advises clearing snow and ice from vents, meters, and exhaust pipes to prevent blockages that could lead to dangerous buildup of gases.

During extreme cold, the utility warns against using ovens or stoves for heating, as this can create fire and health hazards. Instead, use space heaters with automatic shut-off features and keep them at least three feet from flammable materials. UGI also stresses the importance of checking on elderly neighbors and those with medical conditions who may be more vulnerable to the cold.

Scams are another concern during weather emergencies. UGI reports that scammers often pose as utility employees, demanding immediate payment or threatening service disconnection. Customers are reminded that UGI never requests payment via prepaid debit cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. If someone claiming to be from UGI demands immediate payment, customers should hang up and call UGI directly at the number on their bill. For more information, visit www.ugi.com.

The company also urges customers to be aware of phishing emails and fake websites designed to steal personal information. UGI does not send unsolicited emails asking for account details. If a suspicious email is received, it should be deleted without clicking any links. For official updates, customers can rely on UGI's website and verified social media channels.

With temperatures expected to drop further, UGI is prepared to respond to any service interruptions. Customers experiencing outages or gas emergencies should call UGI's 24-hour emergency line. The utility emphasizes that safety is its top priority and encourages everyone to stay warm and alert during this cold snap.
