Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has published a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the company’s Arctic Project in Alaska’s Ambler Mining District. This publication formally initiates environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act and launches the public scoping phase. The high-grade copper-zinc-lead-gold-silver project is being advanced by Ambler Metals LLC, Trilogy’s 50/50 joint venture with South32 Limited (ASX: S32; LSE: S32; JSE: S32; ADR: SOUHY).
The Notice of Intent represents the first key federal milestone under the coordinated federal and state permitting schedule published in July 2026. Under the approximately 29-month review timetable, the schedule continues to target publication of a draft EIS in October 2027 and a Record of Decision in September 2028, with remaining federal and state authorizations targeted for overall completion in November 2028. This timeline provides investors and stakeholders with a clear regulatory pathway, reducing uncertainty around the project’s advancement.
For Trilogy Metals, the start of the federal environmental review is a critical step toward developing the Arctic Project, which is located within the Ambler Mining District—one of the richest and most-prospective known copper-dominant districts in the world. The district hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits that contain copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits that have been found to host high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Exploration efforts have been focused on two deposits: the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit. Both deposits are located within a land package that spans approximately 190,929 hectares.
The project’s potential is significant not only for Trilogy Metals but also for the broader North American copper supply chain. As the world transitions to renewable energy and electric vehicles, demand for copper is expected to rise substantially. The Ambler Mining District could become a premier North American copper producer, helping to reduce reliance on foreign sources of critical minerals. Trilogy Metals’ vision is to develop the district while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods, an approach that has been formalized through an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation. This agreement provides a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities.
