Transatlantic Relations Under Strain After Trump's Davos Deception, Says Expert Elizabeth Graham

Transatlantic relations have been significantly undermined by President Donald Trump's deceptive statements at the World Economic Forum in Davos, according to Elizabeth Graham, author of the bestselling ebook 'From Democracy to Democrazy.' In a recent Substack post titled 'Deception At Davos,' Graham writes that European leaders, who have sought to engage Trump through diplomatic gestures such as commitments to purchase American goods and gifts, are now facing unprecedented tension.

Trump flew to Switzerland to join discussions about his promise to 'take Greenland by force if necessary.' Graham notes that while Americans are familiar with Trump's misleading statements, Europeans have not been as exposed. She describes his Davos speech as 'incoherent' and deceptive, particularly his claim that he will not use force, which she says is a tactic to con others. She compares this to his approach to Venezuela, where he announced control over the country's gas and oil industry.

Graham highlights the strategic importance of Greenland, which possesses untapped rare minerals used in magnets for aircraft engines, electric cars, and defense. According to Wikipedia, China dominates the global rare earth magnet market, giving it significant leverage. Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods led to export controls on rare earth elements, and now he seeks alternative supply chains by owning Greenland, claiming it is for U.S. security—a tactic identical to his grab of Venezuela.

Graham warns that Trump will not stop at Venezuela and Greenland but will pursue further territorial gains through deception. She cites a PBS report stating that Trump and his family received $1.4 billion from his presidency in 2025. She urges Europe to stand firm against Trump's attempts to gain ownership of Greenland, questioning which country he might target next.

Graham, who has a background with the CIA and studied Russia extensively, emphasizes the need for vigilance. Her work is available on her Substack blog at egraham.substack.com, where she shares insights drawn from decades of experience. She also announced the upcoming release of a new book, 'Survival: Democracy's Struggle To Survive,' featuring contributions from authors including Craig Unger and Charlie Sykes.
