The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been awarded the 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, recognizing its distinguished wine program. The award, part of Wine Spectator's annual Restaurant Awards, honors establishments that demonstrate a strong commitment to wine service and offer well-curated wine lists.
Wine Spectator's 2026 Restaurant Awards celebrate 4,012 restaurants worldwide across three tiers: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. The Italian Barrel received the Award of Excellence, which requires at least 75 wine selections and a thoughtfully chosen assortment of quality producers that complement the menu in price and style.
"Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course," said Lori and Kevin Cates, co-owners of The Italian Barrel. "This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."
The restaurant, located at 1240 Decatur Street, was founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and is now operated by the Cates, who are longtime patrons. The menu features seasonal pastas, composed secondi, and carefully sourced ingredients, with a deeply Italian wine program designed to be savored course by course.
Wine Spectator Chairman and CEO Marvin R. Shanken noted the evolving restaurant landscape, saying, "The restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how and what they drink. As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs." He congratulated all winners for elevating the wine experience for guests worldwide.
Launched in 1981, the Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards have become a benchmark for excellence in wine service. This year, 2,083 restaurants earned the Award of Excellence, 1,830 received the Best of Award of Excellence, and 99 achieved the Grand Award. The special Restaurant Awards issue will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026.
