Stonegate Capital Partners has initiated coverage on Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM), underscoring a strategic shift in the company's earnings model following the Pizza Hut divestiture. The move focuses attention on Taco Bell's U.S. growth and KFC's international development potential, with recent quarterly results indicating robust performance outside of Pizza Hut.
Yum!'s second-quarter 2026 results, excluding Pizza Hut, showed system sales increasing 7%, unit growth of 6%, same-store sales up 4%, and core operating profit rising 8%. These figures highlight the strength of the remaining portfolio, which is now centered on Taco Bell and KFC. Taco Bell continues to serve as the primary U.S. growth engine, while KFC offers the largest long-term development opportunity, supported by attractive franchisee economics and significant international whitespace.
A July food safety issue has created a near-term interruption for Taco Bell, but Stonegate views the impact as temporary. Sales trends have improved from the July 18 low, online sentiment has returned to pre-issue levels, and brand-love measures remain intact. Management expects the issue to pressure third-quarter sales and margins, but the underlying brand strength appears resilient.
KFC's international expansion is a key driver of Yum!'s growth narrative. In the second quarter, KFC opened 660 gross restaurants across 55 markets, achieving 7% unit growth. The division continues to target higher average unit volumes (AUVs) and same-store sales, with an estimated 20,000-unit whitespace opportunity globally. This expansion is supported by strong franchisee returns, which are reinforced by the broader operating model's improved restaurant-level performance.
The Pizza Hut divestiture is expected to leave Yum! increasingly concentrated around its higher-growth, predominantly franchised KFC and Taco Bell businesses. The transaction provides approximately $2.3 billion in expected aggregate net proceeds, which Stonegate anticipates will be used for revolver repayment and substantial share repurchases. These actions are expected to complement continued unit development and royalty growth across the remaining portfolio.
Stonegate's coverage highlights the evolving earnings profile of Yum!, which is becoming more streamlined and focused on its most promising brands. The company's recurring royalty base is expected to benefit from faster unit development and stronger franchisee performance, positioning Yum! for sustained growth in the coming years.
