SoulfulDate, an online social communication platform, has released findings from a voluntary survey of approximately 2,300 members on their use of Icebreakers, a feature offering pre-written conversation starters. The survey, conducted from April to June 2026, reveals a near-even split: 52% of respondents used the templates unmodified, while 41% customized them before sending, and 7% varied their approach based on the recipient's profile.
The data offers insight into a defining tension in digital communication: the trade-off between efficiency and self-expression. Among default users, 36% found the template sufficient, 33% preferred saving time, 12% felt it matched what they would have written, and 19% were uncertain what to write. The latter aligns with research published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking indicating that individuals with higher social anxiety are less likely to initiate contact online, even when tools are provided.
The survey also examined sending behavior: 43% typically selected three recipients per session, the midpoint of the available range, while only 11% consistently sent to the maximum of five. Notably, users who sent to five recipients were 16 percentage points more likely to use the default template (68% vs. 52%), suggesting that broader-reach usage correlates with a preference for efficiency over personalization.
Customizers, on the other hand, made changes for personalization (54%), to reference specific profile details (23%), to feel more comfortable with self-written messages (15%), or due to dissatisfaction with the default tone (8%). Overall, 76% of respondents described their post-send experience as confident or neutral, positioning Icebreakers as a low-friction entry point.
A SoulfulDate product team representative commented: "The split we see in how SoulfulDate members use Icebreakers reflects something broader about how people approach a first message. Some members value the speed and simplicity of a ready-made prompt. Others want to say something that feels specific to the person they are reaching out to. Understanding the difference between those two groups and what each of them needs shapes how we think about the feature going forward."
The survey collected no personally identifiable information, with responses stored independently of user accounts and an anonymity notice shown before participation. Only aggregated results were retained. All respondents were registered, active SoulfulDate members who had used Icebreakers at least once; no demographic data was collected beyond age eligibility (18+) and prior feature use. Participation was opt-in, so results reflect engaged users and may not represent the broader membership.
SoulfulDate is an online platform offering free registration and profile browsing, with premium options for messaging, long-form correspondence, and media sharing. New members can follow the SoulfulDate setup guide to get started.
