August is National Dog Month, and Smith Brothers Farms is celebrating the loyal companions who greet their delivery drivers at doorsteps across the Pacific Northwest. The family-owned dairy and home delivery company, headquartered in Kent, Wash., is teaming up with Blue Dog Bakery to offer weekly prize packs throughout the month, including a $50 grocery delivery credit.
According to Peter Olson, Senior Marketing Manager at Smith Brothers Farms, the tradition of rewarding dogs with treats is a year-round practice. "Our Milkmen and Milkwomen keep complimentary dog treats on their trucks and love rewarding the pups who eagerly greet them at the door," he said. "It's a small thing that helps make delivery day a little more special."
Beyond the festivities, the company is using the occasion to remind pet owners about summer safety. The Humane Society offers several tips to keep dogs safe in warm weather. Never leave pets in a parked car, as temperatures can rise dangerously even with windows cracked. Protect sensitive paws by testing pavement with the back of your hand before walks, and schedule walks for cooler times of day. Always provide fresh, cool water at home and during outings. Create cool spaces with shade and consider a shallow kiddie pool. Watch for signs of overheating, such as heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, or difficulty walking. Especially during wildfire season, shorten vigorous activities and monitor your pet's comfort level.
