SAN DIEGO, CA - Sigyn Therapeutics, Inc. (OTCQB: SIGY) has launched a collaborative initiative to evaluate emerging medical technologies in former NFL players at risk of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The company, developer of CardioDialysis, an extracorporeal blood purification device designed to clear inflammatory and pathogenic molecules from the bloodstream, aims to address the high rates of neurodegenerative diseases among retired players, including ALS, Parkinson's disease, and CTE.
Recent research from Trinity College Dublin, reported last month, found that chronic inflammation can compromise the blood-brain barrier (BBB), leaving it leaky for decades after an athlete retires from sports involving repetitive head trauma. This leakage allows inflammatory and pathogenic molecules to enter the brain, triggering neuroinflammation that accelerates tau-protein accumulation, a hallmark of CTE. Based on this discovery, it is anticipated that many former NFL players may live in a persistent state of hyper-inflammation, increasing their CTE risk.
Sigyn's initiative will evaluate the feasibility of CardioDialysis to reduce circulating inflammatory molecules such as TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6, and bacterial endotoxin, which are key contributors to CTE progression. The device integrates plasma separation and therapeutic adsorption in a single system, enabling continuous broad-spectrum clearance. Additionally, the initiative will assess blood-based neuron-derived exosome assays to monitor CTE progression, response to therapies, and changes in BBB permeability. Other candidate therapies under evaluation include a tau vaccine and a brain-delivered anti-inflammatory drug agent.
