SCHOTT Pharma, a provider of drug containment solutions and delivery systems, is advancing its climate strategy following the validation of its parent group's updated science-based targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The new framework, which applies to SCHOTT Pharma as part of the SCHOTT Group, maintains the existing Scope 1 and 2 reduction goals while introducing a more rigorous absolute Scope 3 target, aiming to cut emissions across the value chain by 27.5% by fiscal year 2030 compared to a 2019 baseline.
The updated targets reflect a deliberate shift from supplier-focused commitments to concrete product and process improvements, enabling the company to prioritize actions with the greatest impact. According to Reinhard Mayer, CFO of SCHOTT Pharma, the new Scope 3 target allows the company to focus on emission reductions that matter most across its value chain. The validation also leads to the discontinuation of the previous internal goal of "climate neutral by 2030," which was limited to Scope 1 and 2 and included compensation.
SCHOTT Pharma has been actively pursuing decarbonization initiatives, including sourcing Energy Attribute Certificates from renewable energies since 2021. The company is also investing in energy efficiency and innovative technologies, such as an advanced membrane-based system for Water for Injection production at its Swiss site, which reduces reliance on natural gas and improves water efficiency.
Collaboration with suppliers and customers is key to addressing emissions in the value chain, particularly in the glass tubing used for pharmaceutical packaging, which constitutes a significant portion of the carbon footprint. Innovations in low-emission melting technologies within the SCHOTT Group's tubing business are expected to contribute to reducing Scope 3.1 emissions. Additionally, SCHOTT Pharma evaluates suppliers' climate commitments and supports their decarbonization efforts through initiatives like Energize and the Alliance to Zero.
