Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) was featured on the latest episode of The BioMedWire Podcast, where co-founder and executive co-chair Anthony Durkacz discussed the company's lead drug candidate, Lucid-MS, and its commercial alcohol metabolism product, unbuzzd(TM). Durkacz emphasized that Lucid-MS is being developed to address mobility loss associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) by targeting nerve damage, an area he believes remains unmet by currently available treatments. The therapy aims to prevent and reverse myelin degradation, the underlying mechanism of MS, based on preclinical models.
Durkacz also highlighted unbuzzd(TM), a product designed to accelerate blood alcohol metabolism, currently available in the U.S. market. Quantum BioPharma retains a 19.84% ownership stake in Unbuzzd Wellness Inc., which markets the over-the-counter version, and is entitled to royalty payments of 7% of sales until $250 million is reached, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. This structure provides a recurring revenue stream from a consumer health product while the company focuses on its pharmaceutical pipeline.
Looking ahead, Quantum BioPharma is preparing for a Phase 2 clinical trial for Lucid-MS, which will be the first study to evaluate the drug candidate in multiple sclerosis patients, following Phase 1 testing in healthy volunteers. This trial represents a critical step toward validating Lucid-MS's potential to address a significant unmet need in MS treatment. According to Durkacz, the company's dual strategy of advancing a novel therapy for neurodegeneration and commercializing a metabolism product positions Quantum BioPharma for growth in both the pharmaceutical and consumer health markets.
