Vostock Capital UK has released the “Desalination Projects Latin America” report, a comprehensive analysis of 23 flagship desalination projects across Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Brazil. The report highlights initiatives that are shaping water security and sustainability in the region, with combined investments reaching billions of dollars.
Among the featured projects is the El Abra Mill Project in Chile, developed by Freeport-McMoRan and Codelco, with an estimated cost of $7.5 billion. The project includes a seawater desalination plant with a capacity of 500 liters per second, along with a concentrator and pumping system. Another major initiative in Chile is the Desalination Plant in Coquimbo Region, led by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), which will deliver a 1,200 l/s plant to supply potable water to Coquimbo and La Serena at a cost of $350 million.
In Peru, the Tía María Copper Project, developed by Southern Copper Corp, features a 235 l/s seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant dedicated to mining processes. The $1.8 billion project includes pumping, storage, and transport infrastructure. Mexico's Los Cabos, Baja California Sur project is an $85 million state-of-the-art desalination plant with a capacity of 250 l/s, designed to meet growing water demand sustainably.
Brazil's Ceará Seawater Desalination Plant, developed by Cagece, is a $620 million project with a capacity of 1,000 l/s. It will supply potable water to over 720,000 people in Fortaleza, serving as a flagship water resilience initiative in the semi-arid northeast.
As part of the 2026 desalination agenda, Vostock Capital will host two exclusive technical site visits in Spain: one at the AcuaMed Desalination Plant in Murcia on May 13-14, and another at the ATL Desalination Plant in Llobregat on September 22-23. These visits aim to provide professionals with firsthand insight into advanced desalination techniques and operating facilities.
