Tilton's journey into widowhood began suddenly with the unexpected death of her husband, a fallen firefighter. In her search for guidance, she found that most books on grief were written by authors with professional expertise but lacked the visceral understanding that comes from lived experience. "When I became a widow, I went looking for a 'how-to' book," Tilton said. "All I found were grief books written by very educated authors who had a lot of head knowledge, but no heart knowledge. You only gain heart knowledge by walking the path." This realization spurred her to write the book she wished she had found—one that speaks directly to the everyday realities of widowhood, from loneliness and uncertainty to the significance of mundane tasks like buying groceries.
The book's title, Today, I Bought Bananas, reflects how even routine activities can underscore the dramatic changes in a widow's life. Tilton hopes the book will reassure widows that they are not alone in their feelings and help others better understand the widows in their lives. Her professional role as Insurance Coordinator for Katy Independent School District has given her extensive experience supporting hundreds of widows through life insurance claims, adding a practical dimension to her insights. Additionally, she founded and leads 'The Journey Girls,' a support group of approximately 40 widows who meet regularly for friendship, encouragement, faith, and community.
Tilton's Christian faith is central to her work, and she describes her writing journey simply: "God guides me." While the book speaks directly to widows, it also serves as a valuable resource for relatives, friends, church leaders, and community members seeking to offer meaningful support. Her message is one of hope: healing may be gradual, but it is possible to move forward one day, one step, and one small moment at a time.
