Top motivational speaker and bestselling author Rocky Romanella has introduced a keynote topic he believes is essential for the modern workplace: "The Heart and Soul of AI." In a recent newsletter, Romanella acknowledged the transformative power of artificial intelligence but stressed that AI lacks the human qualities necessary to lead. "AI can produce, but it cannot lead," he wrote, emphasizing that the future belongs to leaders who lead with humanity.
Romanella's keynote challenges leaders to recommit to their people, purpose, and values in an era where AI handles tactical tasks. He argues that while AI can analyze data, spot patterns, and create efficiencies, it cannot feel, believe, trust, hope, or care. "It cannot inspire a team on the brink of burnout. It cannot look someone in the eye and say, 'I believe in you.' It cannot build a culture where people feel seen, valued, and understood," Romanella stated. He believes only leaders can do that, and only people can do that.
The keynote introduces the concept of AIAI — "Am I All In?" — which Romanella describes as the internal operating system leaders need in the AI era. It poses three questions every leader must master: What is the issue or opportunity? How do I get my team aligned and committed? How do I turn intent into business results? These questions form the backbone of strategic leadership, where AI can analyze information but only leaders can create meaning.
Drawing from his own experience, Romanella shared a story about his wife, Debbie, who when asked which of their children was her favorite, replied, "They all are, because everyone gets what they need when they need it." He called that a masterclass in leadership, emphasizing the importance of understanding people as individuals. "That single moment reshaped how I led teams, coached leaders, and built organizations. And it is exactly the kind of leadership the AI era demands," he said.
Romanella, who started his career with clipboards and carbon paper, has lived through barcodes, automation, digital transformation, and now AI. He noted that technology may change the work, but leadership must still lift the people. He warned that a generation entering the workforce is waiting for AI to define them, stuck between what AI is and what it isn't, leading to paralysis and fear. Leaders must have the courage to bring heart and soul back into the conversation.
