The title refers to a peace summit organized by the novel's protagonist, Archbishop Rooney, who brings together 72 clerics from various faiths—12 Christians, 12 Hebrews, 12 Muslims, 12 Buddhists, 12 Hindus, and 12 Atheists—to address the world's moral decline. The "50 parachutes" allude to a fictional emergency escape plan for the Sears Tower in Chicago, dubbed "Plan Z," which serves as a metaphor for a last-resort effort to save humanity from itself.
The story is a classic battle of good versus evil, love versus hate, and forgiveness versus revenge. Archbishop Rooney, described as an "old school, old hoot," does not shy away from criticizing the modern world's drift from God.
