Kiora Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: KPRX) today reported preclinical data demonstrating that KIO-300, a novel ion channel modulator, significantly suppressed seizure-associated electrophysiological activity in an ex vivo temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) model. The findings were presented in a poster at the Epilepsy Foundation Pipeline Conference taking place June 18-19, 2026, in Leesburg, VA.
KIO-300 is the active pharmaceutical ingredient of KIO-301, Kiora’s ongoing Phase 2 clinical program in vision restoration for patients with gene mutation-agnostic retinitis pigmentosa. The new data indicate that KIO-300 may have broader therapeutic applications beyond ophthalmology, potentially addressing neurological disorders such as epilepsy.
The study utilized an ex vivo TLE model to assess the effects of KIO-300 on epileptiform activity. Results showed a significant reduction in seizure-associated electrophysiological events, suggesting that KIO-300 could modulate ion channels involved in neuronal hyperexcitability. This mechanism of action is distinct from many existing antiepileptic drugs, offering a potential new approach for treatment-resistant epilepsy.
Kiora Pharmaceuticals is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing advanced therapies for retinal disease, targeting critical pathways underlying retinal degeneration. KIO-301, a molecular photoswitch, is being developed initially for retinitis pigmentosa, with potential expansion into choroideremia and Stargardt disease. KIO-104, a next-generation non-steroidal immuno-modulatory small-molecule inhibitor of DHODH, is in development for macular edema due to retinal inflammation.
The company’s ion channel modulator platform, from which KIO-300 is derived, represents a versatile technology that could address multiple indications. The positive preclinical results in epilepsy support further investigation into KIO-300 as a potential treatment for seizure disorders. Kiora plans to continue advancing the program, with additional preclinical studies and potential clinical development.
These forward-looking statements involve risks and uncertainties, as detailed in Kiora’s SEC filings, including the ability to conduct clinical trials on a timely basis and the potential for pipeline expansion. The company does not undertake any obligation to update these statements.
