Hong Kong Campaign Aims to Help Malaysian Businesses Tap Regional Growth

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will bring its flagship promotional campaign, Think Business, Think Hong Kong (TBTHK), to Kuala Lumpur on 11 August, aiming to help Malaysian businesses leverage Hong Kong's networks and expertise for regional and global expansion. The full-day symposium at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur will gather business leaders, investors, and policymakers from both markets to explore investment opportunities and forge cross-border partnerships.

Targeting Malaysian companies seeking to grow beyond domestic markets, the event aligns with Malaysia's New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which focuses on industrial transformation, sustainability, and global value chain integration. TBTHK will highlight how Hong Kong can support these ambitions by providing access to its established ecosystem of nearly 10,000 mainland and overseas companies, as well as professional services in finance, innovation, and sustainability.

'Malaysia and Hong Kong share a long-standing and mutually beneficial economic relationship,' said Leung Kwan Ho, HKTDC's Regional Director of South East Asia & South Asia, at a press briefing. 'As Malaysia strengthens its position as a regional hub, Hong Kong can serve as a superconnector and super value-adder, enabling Malaysian companies to realise their ambitions beyond the domestic market.' Discussions will cover RMB internationalisation, green innovations, and healthcare solutions, reflecting Malaysia's evolving economic priorities.

The symposium will feature Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and YB Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia, as guests of honour. About 30 Hong Kong service providers and start-ups will showcase products in the Business Support Zone and InnoVenture Salon, with one-on-one business consultations and on-site matching to facilitate deals. A delegation of around 100 Hong Kong officials and business leaders will also explore opportunities through networking events.

Hong Kong's role as a gateway to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the wider China market is a key draw. For Malaysian companies, the city offers access to global investors, financial institutions, and professional services that support cross-border investment and international expansion. The event also aims to strengthen ties for Hong Kong and mainland companies looking to enter Malaysia and ASEAN.

Malaysia and Hong Kong have deep economic links. In 2025, Malaysia was Hong Kong's third-largest trading partner among ASEAN states. Hong Kong was Malaysia's second-largest foreign investor after Singapore, with cumulative FDI of US$34.8 billion by end-2025 and net FDI flows of US$1.6 billion that year. The TBTHK campaign, now in its 60th anniversary year for HKTDC, underscores the council's role in promoting Hong Kong as a two-way global business hub. The event reflects Hong Kong's commitment to deepening business collaboration with Malaysia and helping local companies tap opportunities across regional and global markets, leveraging the city's unique advantages as an international financial and business centre.
