HDBank's First-Half Profit Surges 31%, Assets Cross VND1 Quadrillion

HDBank has reported a strong financial performance for the first half of 2026, with pre-tax profit increasing by 31% year-on-year to VND13.2 trillion (US$505 million). The bank's total assets grew by 12.3% from the beginning of the year to VND1.04 quadrillion (US$39.6 billion) as of June 30, making it one of the few Vietnamese banks to surpass the VND1 quadrillion (US$38 billion) mark. This achievement underscores the bank's significant scale and its ability to sustain growth in a competitive market.

The bank delivered industry-leading profitability, with a return on equity (ROE) of 25.4% and a return on assets (ROA) of 2.17%. Total operating income rose by 8.8% year-on-year to VND22.68 trillion (US$862.8 million), driven by a 23.1% increase in non-interest income. Digital transformation has been a key driver, reducing the cost-to-income ratio to 24.9% and enabling more than 94% of retail transactions to be conducted digitally. This focus on digital efficiency has not only improved profitability but also enhanced customer experience.

Outstanding loans grew by 18.8% to VND698.36 trillion (US$266 billion), with lending concentrated in manufacturing, SMEs, agriculture, infrastructure, supply chains, and consumer finance. Total funding reached VND932.44 trillion (US$35.5 billion), up 12.1%, while customer deposits increased by more than 20%. This robust deposit growth, coupled with a loan-to-deposit ratio of 72%, highlights the bank's strong liquidity and prudent balance sheet management.

HDBank's growth is propelled by an integrated ecosystem that spans banking, digital finance, securities, insurance, fund management, and consumer finance, alongside aviation, real estate, infrastructure, technology, and education. The bank serves over 34 million direct customers and reaches an additional 20 million through partners, facilitating strong customer acquisition and cross-selling opportunities. Among its subsidiaries, HD SAISON posted a pre-tax profit of over VND804 billion (US$30.6 million), while HD Securities reported a pre-tax profit of VND1.47 trillion (US$55.9 million), up 286% year-on-year, positioning it among Vietnam's 10 most profitable securities firms. Vikki Digital Bank expanded its user base to more than 3.5 million.

HDBank maintained strong financial health with a Basel II capital adequacy ratio above 14% and Basel III liquidity ratios, including the liquidity coverage ratio and net stable funding ratio, remaining above 100%. The bank's creditworthiness was further affirmed by Moody's Ratings, which upgraded its outlook to positive in the second quarter, and Fitch Ratings, which assigned first-time Long-Term Foreign- and Local-Currency Issuer Default Ratings of 'BB-', placing HDBank among the highest-rated commercial banks in Vietnam. Additionally, HDBank secured a US$721 million international syndicated social loan, the largest such loan ever raised by a Vietnamese organisation, reflecting its strong reputation and access to international capital markets.

With this strong momentum, HDBank is well positioned to achieve and potentially surpass its 2026 pre-tax profit target of over VND30.1 trillion (US$1.1 billion), which would represent a 41% increase from 2025. The bank's performance in the first half of the year demonstrates its resilience and strategic execution, setting a solid foundation for continued growth and value creation for its stakeholders.
