Greenland Mines Closes Sarfartoq Rare Earths Acquisition, Bolsters Western Supply Chain

Greenland Mines Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRML) has completed the acquisition of the Sarfartoq Nd-Pr Rare Earths Project in southwest Greenland, a strategic move that strengthens the Western rare earth supply chain. The transaction, valued at $20 million in cash and $15 million in securities, closed on September 1, 2026, as announced by the company. This acquisition positions Greenland Mines to become a major supplier of neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide, a critical component in permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and other high-tech applications.

The Sarfartoq project is expected to produce approximately 34% of all NdPr oxide refined outside China at 2025 consumption levels during each of its nine scheduled operating years. This is a significant contribution given that China currently dominates the global rare earth market, controlling over 80% of refining capacity. Independent assessments indicate the project's high-case pre-tax net present value (NPV) is approximately $2.05 billion, with an internal rate of return (IRR) of 118.6%. These figures are based solely on the ST1 deposit, which includes both Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resources, underscoring the project's economic viability.

With the acquisition complete, Greenland Mines is poised to advance Sarfartoq toward a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS). The company has outlined a series of planned activities, including targeted infill drilling, pilot-scale metallurgical test work, mine engineering planning, environmental and social baseline studies, and drone-based magnetic surveys. These efforts are designed to further de-risk the project and prepare it for the next stage of development, which could lead to a production decision.

One of the key aspects of the transaction is the strategic partnership with Neo Performance Materials (TSX: NEO), which has become a shareholder in Greenland Mines and retains offtake rights for up to 60% of Sarfartoq's future ore or mineral concentrate production. This offtake agreement ensures a stable market for Sarfartoq's output and supports Neo's Silmet rare earth separation facility in Estonia, enhancing the European supply chain. This collaboration is a clear indication of the growing importance of securing rare earth sources outside China to meet the demands of the green energy transition.

The Sarfartoq acquisition is a pivotal step for Greenland Mines as it builds a multi-asset platform with exposure to rare earth magnet materials, precious metals, and midstream processing opportunities. The company's broader vision includes the North Atlantic Critical Metals Corridor, which aims to link Greenland's resources with allied downstream jurisdictions and industrial infrastructure. This strategy is particularly relevant in the context of global supply chain security, as nations seek to reduce their dependence on Chinese rare earth exports.

Analysts view this acquisition as a positive development for the rare earth market, which has been characterized by price volatility and supply concerns. The project's high-grade NdPr deposits are among the richest outside China, and its location in Greenland offers geopolitical advantages. However, the project is not without challenges, including Arctic operating conditions and the need for significant infrastructure investment. Nevertheless, the company's commitment to environmental and social baseline studies indicates a responsible approach to development.

Greenland Mines' progress on Sarfartoq will be closely watched by investors and industry stakeholders. The company's stock performance and future announcements will provide insights into the project's advancement. The successful closing of this acquisition marks a significant milestone for the company and the broader effort to diversify the global rare earth supply chain.
