Greenland Energy Company (NASDAQ: GLND) has entered into a pivotal agreement to advance drilling in the Jameson Land Basin, one of the world's largest remaining underexplored onshore hydrocarbon regions. The basin, spanning more than 8,400 square kilometers in Greenland, has attracted industry attention for decades due to its potential to hold tens of billions of barrels of oil equivalent. Under the terms of the deal, Greenland Energy will fully fund the drilling program, acquiring a 70% stake in the project, while 80 Mile, the current owner, retains 30%.
The company has contracted Halliburton, a global leader in oilfield services, to handle project management and logistics planning, underscoring the scale and complexity of operations in the remote Arctic environment. The Jameson Land Basin's geological promise is based on extensive seismic and geological studies dating back to the 1970s, though it has never yielded a commercial discovery. A 2008 U.S. Geological Survey report estimated less than a 10% chance of containing a technically recoverable hydrocarbon accumulation, highlighting the speculative nature of the venture.
For Greenland Energy, the project represents a high-risk, high-reward opportunity. The company's forward-looking statements acknowledge significant exploration and geological risks, including the inherent uncertainty in prospective resource estimates. The 13 billion barrel estimate is based on undiscovered accumulations with no certainty of discovery or commercial viability. Additional challenges include geological complexity from limited seismic data, pervasive igneous intrusions, and thermal maturity uncertainty due to significant Tertiary uplift. Drilling costs are estimated at $40 million for the first well and $20 million for subsequent wells, with no existing infrastructure in the remote Arctic location.
Operational and environmental risks are substantial. The extreme climate, harsh weather, limited daylight, and seasonal access windows for equipment and personnel pose logistical hurdles. Drilling hazards such as blowouts, equipment failures, and environmental releases are inherent in oil and gas operations, particularly in frontier areas. Climate change scrutiny adds another layer, as Arctic drilling faces increasing opposition from environmental groups and institutional investors. Greenland itself imposed a drilling moratorium in 2021, though existing licenses are grandfathered; future regulatory changes could still jeopardize operations.
Regulatory and political risks also loom. The U.S. interest in acquiring Greenland and Greenland's internal independence movements could affect operations. Drilling requires approval of an Environmental Impact Assessment and a Field Activities Application from Greenlandic authorities. Failure to meet drilling milestones could result in forfeiture of the company's right to earn working interests.
Financially, the company faces significant capital requirements beyond current resources to complete the drilling program. Commodity price volatility, a long development timeline, and energy transition risks—such as declining global oil demand due to electric vehicle adoption and renewable energy policies—could undermine project viability.
