Grandfather Turns Grief into Peace Mission with Peace Rides in South Central LA

On June 28, 2026, members of the Peace Rides gathered for their monthly motorcycle ride through South Central Los Angeles, a tradition spanning 14 years aimed at promoting peace and supporting families affected by violence. Among the riders was a 70-year-old professional wedding photographer attending his first Peace Ride, his life forever altered by the tragic loss of his 32-year-old grandson. Following an argument, another man left the scene, returned with a firearm, and fatally shot the young man, who leaves behind 12 children. Described by his grandfather as a productive community member, his death sparked a commitment to healing rather than retaliation.

The grandfather has chosen to honor his grandson's memory by joining one of the motorcycle groups that participate in the monthly Peace Rides, hoping his voice and example can prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedy. During the ride, he was presented a copy of The Way to Happiness, a common-sense guide to better living written by L. Ron Hubbard, Humanitarian and Founder of the Scientology Religion. He accepted it with gratitude and took additional copies to share with others, spreading a message of peace, compassion, and personal responsibility in his community.

For 14 years, Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International has donated The Way to Happiness booklets to the Peace Rides events. The booklet states, "Happiness lies in engaging in worthwhile activities" and "And that is my wish for you: flourish and prosper!" The Scientology religion, founded by L. Ron Hubbard, has expanded to more than 11,000 Churches, Missions, and affiliated groups, with millions of members in 167 countries. The first Church of Scientology was formed in Los Angeles in 1954. More information is available at https://www.scientology.cc.

The Peace Rides represent a community effort to transform grief into positive action, demonstrating that unity and peace can prevail over violence. Each month, riders assemble at a local Park & Ride, travel through neighborhood streets, and conclude at Athens Park, reinforcing a message of hope and resilience. The grandfather's participation underscores the profound impact of personal tragedy channeled into communal healing, offering a powerful example for others affected by violence.
