Frontieras North America, an energy and environmental technology company, has announced a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Cora Terminal, LLC, a joint venture between Watco Companies, LLC and SCH Services, LLC, to develop a multi-phase FASForm(TM) production facility at the Cora Terminal in Rockwood, Illinois. This strategic move aims to leverage the terminal's substantial infrastructure to process significant quantities of coal into cleaner products, reinforcing Frontieras' role in redefining coal utilization.
The proposed project would initially lease approximately 85 acres for a plant designed to process 7,500 tons of coal feedstock daily. A later expansion would add about 130 acres for a second plant. At full buildout, the site would receive around 5.5 million net tons of coal feedstock annually, producing a range of valuable products including FASCarbon(TM), ultra-low-sulfur diesel, jet fuel, ammonium sulfate fertilizer, sulfuric acid, and naphtha. This initiative aligns with Frontieras' mission to convert coal into clean fuels and industrial chemicals through its patented zero-waste process.
This announcement underscores the growing momentum behind Frontieras' technology. The Cora project would become its third announced commercial site, following an $850 million facility under construction in Mason County, West Virginia. The Cora Terminal, chosen for its exceptional logistics, can accommodate up to four unit trains simultaneously and move more than 11 million tons of coal annually. It also owns over 300 acres of developable land, providing ample room for expansion and related activities.
Under the LOI, the parties will conduct site due diligence, engineering, permitting, and infrastructure assessment, working toward definitive lease and transportation agreements. It is important to note that the LOI is an expression of mutual intent rather than a binding commitment, with any final agreements subject to successful completion of these processes and securing necessary approvals.
The implications of this development are significant for the energy sector. By establishing a large-scale facility in Illinois, Frontieras aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of its FASForm technology beyond its West Virginia project. This could potentially create a new market for coal that addresses environmental concerns, as the process produces no waste and yields cleaner-burning fuels and valuable byproducts.
