Firearms Instructor Rick Billington Launches National Educational Initiative on Responsible Gun Ownership

Veteran firearms instructor and author Rick Billington has launched a national educational initiative aimed at promoting responsible gun ownership through a new book and a six-part blog series. The initiative, announced June 30, 2026, seeks to refocus the national dialogue on firearms from political debates to the practical responsibilities of civilian firearm owners.

Billington, founder of Michigan Pistol Academy, released his book The Responsible Gun Owner, which addresses the mental, legal, emotional, and decision-making aspects of firearm ownership. The book emphasizes that owning a firearm is a constitutional right, but responsible ownership requires education beyond basic marksmanship.

In conjunction with the book, Billington is launching The Responsible Gun Owner Educational Series, a six-part blog series beginning July 12, 2026. The series covers topics such as mindset, self-defense law, conflict avoidance, home defense planning, decision-making under stress, and emotional control.

"Far too much of the conversation around firearms focuses exclusively on the weapon itself," Billington said. "Very little attention is given to the responsibility, judgment, and decision-making that ultimately determine whether a firearm owner is truly prepared."

The initiative challenges common misconceptions by highlighting that responsible ownership involves more than technical shooting skills. Billington, who has decades of experience in law enforcement and civilian firearms education, stresses that a firearm should not be viewed as the first answer to conflict. The goal is to equip owners with judgment, emotional discipline, and conflict avoidance strategies.

The campaign is hosted through Michigan Pistol Academy, where the blog series will be released weekly throughout the summer. The book is available on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.

By focusing on personal accountability rather than political rhetoric, Billington's initiative aims to provide a broader framework for responsible civilian firearm ownership, helping owners understand the deeper realities of carrying a weapon in daily life.
