Dr. Wael Sakr, a prominent figure in pathology and medical education, has announced a national scholarship initiative aimed at supporting undergraduate students who aspire to become medical doctors. The Dr. Wael Sakr Scholarship for Medical Students offers a one-time award of $1,000 to a student who demonstrates academic commitment, a genuine interest in medicine, and a clear desire to contribute positively to healthcare. The scholarship is open to undergraduate students across the United States who are on a pre-med track or pursuing a path toward a career as an MD or DO.
The initiative reflects Dr. Sakr's professional values, shaped by more than four decades in pathology, medical education, and cancer research. After completing his medical training at the University of Damascus in Syria, he pursued postgraduate education in the United States, including an Anatomic Pathology residency and a Surgical Pathology fellowship. He joined Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1990 and later served as Chairman of its Department of Pathology from 2008 to 2022. In 2022, he became Dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine. His research has focused extensively on prostate cancer, particularly racial disparities affecting disease incidence, progression, and outcomes among African American men. He has contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed publications.
Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university, remain in good academic standing, and submit a complete application by the April 15, 2027 deadline. The application requires a 500–750 word essay responding to the question: "Dr. Wael Sakr has spent his career advancing medicine through research, mentorship, and a commitment to addressing healthcare disparities. What draws you to a career in medicine, and how do you hope to make a meaningful impact as a future physician?"
