The Dow Championship golf event, in partnership with the American Heart Association and LPGA, will offer Hands-Only CPR training to attendees through the Nation of Lifesavers Mobile CPR unit. The training, available throughout tournament days in Midland, Michigan, aims to address the low survival rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, which the American Heart Association reports at 90% mortality due to lack of immediate CPR. Qualified trainers will teach participants the correct compression rate and depth, emphasizing that Hands-Only CPR—calling 911 and pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest—can be as effective as traditional CPR in the first minutes of an emergency.
This initiative is part of the American Heart Association's Nation of Lifesavers movement, which seeks to double survival rates by 2030. The Mobile CPR unit has appeared at major events including the Super Bowl, NFL Draft, and NBA All-Star Game, and will also be present at FIFA Fan Festival sites this summer. The Dow Championship activation underscores a commitment from Dow, the LPGA, and the American Heart Association to empower communities with lifesaving skills.
During the tournament's SOAR Summit, a fireside chat will feature NFL Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, NWSL player Savy King, and American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown. They will share personal stories of resilience following cardiac events, encouraging fans to learn CPR. “Every second counts when a cardiac arrest occurs, and far too often help doesn’t arrive in time because bystanders don’t feel prepared to act,” said Brown in a press release. “We’re grateful to work with Dow and the LPGA at the Dow Championship to bring this lifesaving education directly to the community.”
Dow CEO Jim Fitterling highlighted the company's commitment to healthier communities, stating, “Hosting the Nation of Lifesavers CPR activation at the Dow Championship and convening leaders and athletes at our SOAR Summit reflects our belief in the power of connection, education and action.” The activation aims to add more trained individuals to the Nation of Lifesavers, which has already reached fans at numerous high-profile events.
