For many couples shopping for an engagement ring, the decision often narrows to choosing a recognizable designer piece from brands like Tiffany, Cartier, Verragio, or Tacori, or opting for a custom creation built from scratch. While designer rings carry a prestigious name and iconic presentation, custom rings allow for greater input on proportions, metal choice, daily wear comfort, and budget allocation.
Carl Blackburn, owner of C. Blackburn Jewelers in La Jolla, spends much of his time with clients who appreciate designer aesthetics but want more control over the final product. “Sometimes a client just loves that a ring is a Tiffany, and that is a fine reason to buy it,” Blackburn said. “But most of the time, what they actually love is the look—and once you separate those two things, custom starts to make a lot more sense.”
According to Blackburn, custom design is not about replicating a designer ring but identifying what the client is drawn to—whether it is a vintage detail, the way a halo frames the center stone, or the overall silhouette—and creating a new design around those qualities. A halo can be made more delicate, a setting lowered for everyday wear, the center stone changed to another shape, or the ring crafted in a metal better suited to the client.
To address concerns about the final result matching expectations, Blackburn’s studio uses a detailed design and approval process. After the initial consultation and selection of gemstone and metal, he creates a three-dimensional CAD model. Clients can examine the design from every angle, view a 360-degree video, and request revisions before approving. A full-size resin prototype is then produced so the client can try on the proposed ring and judge its height, proportions, fit, and overall presence before casting. “The resin model is really where the guesswork disappears,” Blackburn said. “You put it on your hand and you know.” After approval, the ring is cast, gemstones are hand-set, and the piece receives final polishing and engraving, typically taking another two to three weeks.
Diamond sourcing is another area where custom work can offer economic advantages. Blackburn, a second-generation jeweler with over three decades of experience, leverages relationships with diamond cutters, wholesale suppliers, and estate specialists. For a natural diamond of comparable grading and size, buyers often spend approximately 15% to 30% less than at a designer boutique or traditional retailer. On stones weighing two carats or more, the difference can amount to several thousand dollars. Lab-grown diamonds can alter the budget even more dramatically; at C. Blackburn Jewelers, a lab-grown diamond of similar size and quality commonly costs only 5% as much as its natural counterpart. That difference can be used to select a larger center stone, upgrade from gold to platinum, add hand engraving, or invest in more detailed setting work.
Custom does not automatically mean lower cost; the quality of the diamond, amount and type of precious metal, and complexity of workmanship all affect the final price. The distinction lies in how the client’s budget is distributed. “Custom should not be thought of as the bargain version of a designer ring,” Blackburn said. “The better question is what you receive for the same total investment. With custom, a larger share can often go toward the diamond, the materials, and the work itself.”
Custom design also allows the studio to take on projects outside typical designer boutique offerings, such as incorporating stones from separate family pieces into one new ring, reconstructing a damaged heirloom using photographs, or transforming an antique engagement ring into a coordinated bridal set. As an appointment-only studio, C. Blackburn Jewelers gives clients direct access to the person designing and supervising the creation of their ring. The business maintains a 5.0-star rating on Google and Yelp, where reviewers often praise Blackburn’s straightforward guidance and low-pressure approach.
For Blackburn, neither option is universally better. A designer ring may be worth the premium when the original brand, presentation, and signature design are central to its appeal. A custom engagement ring becomes more compelling when the client values individuality, control over the details, and the ability to direct more of the budget toward the ring itself.
