The announcement, made in Toronto on Aug. 18, 2026, honors a canine from Ontario and another from Nova Scotia for their incredible instinct, courage, and loyalty when it mattered most.
In Nipigon, Ontario, a dog named Chloe defended her family from a black bear that forced its way into their home. The bear entered through a door and confronted the family, but Chloe acted swiftly, alerting her husband and helping to confine the animal to the basement until police arrived. Her quick thinking and bravery prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.
In Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia, a dog named Timber helped his owner escape a frozen lake. When the owner fell through the ice, Timber pulled forward until his harness caught on branches, giving her the leverage to climb out. The owner credits Timber with helping save her life, as the freezing water and exhaustion could have been fatal without his assistance.
The Purina Animal Hall of Fame was established to celebrate the extraordinary bond between pets and their owners, and to recognize animals that have performed heroic acts. Since its inception, it has honored over 180 animals, including dogs, cats, and even horses, for their life-saving deeds.
