Better World Regulatory Coalition Inc. (BWRCI) has announced the Vertical Stack Coalition, a standards-based framework for near-zero emissions infrastructure designed to address the growing gap between energy demand and supply in urban areas. The initiative, detailed in a press release on February 16, 2026, rethinks energy storage by building upward within urban-compatible structural envelopes, akin to skyscrapers, rather than expanding outward across thousands of acres.
Vertical Stack utilizes commercial molten salt batteries, chosen for their near-zero emission operational phase and low global warming potential of 0.0306 kg CO2 eq/kWh, according to life-cycle assessments. The chemistry avoids lithium-style thermal runaway, flammable solvents, and oxygen-fed combustion, operating within contained thermal systems. This design also enables full domestic sourcing, reducing geopolitical exposure and aligning with U.S. industrial reshoring efforts, as noted in the release: "For long-horizon infrastructure capital — including institutions prioritizing American industrial resilience — supply chain sovereignty is no longer optional." The architecture is compatible with the JPMorganChase Security and Resiliency Initiative.
Scalability is a key feature, with the system designed for geometric scaling through standardized structural envelopes, module integration, and dispatch logic. Construction timelines are projected to be 80–90% faster than traditional carbon steel or concrete versions due to parallelized fabrication and foundation sequencing. Each installation delivers multi-gigawatt-hour daily output with utility-scale dispatch characteristics, fitting within urban footprints and structural loads of conventional high-rises.
The framework also integrates with solar generation, enabling higher penetration without new land expansion by storing midday oversupply for evening demand. It is electrically compatible with modular nuclear generation, supporting load-matched and dispatch-aligned operations. Grid resilience is enhanced through BlackStart potential, allowing islanded operation, controlled ramp sequencing, and microgrid restoration. The release emphasizes, "Urban BlackStart capability is no longer optional. It is sovereignty."
Ownership models include municipal, community, utility partnerships, corporate microgrid sovereignty, defense installation continuity, and industrial campus independence. The initiative targets municipal utilities, independent power producers, modular nuclear developers, data center operators, industrial campus planners, defense infrastructure stakeholders, and institutional capital partners.
