The American Heart Association announced that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, a globally recognized leader in pulmonary vascular research, has become the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal. Effective with today’s issue, Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004 to 2016. This appointment underscores the Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science in cardiovascular medicine.
Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher, is known for his mechanistic and clinical advances in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. He serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also co-executive directs the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing. Previously, he held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and served as a visiting professor at Imperial College London. His career bridges patient care, translational science, and precision medicine, focusing on how pulmonary vascular conditions affect the heart.

New features planned include a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician’s Corner for real-world practice guidance, perspective bundles for key clinical trials, graphic abstracts for all research articles, and a Patient’s Corner for the public. The journal will also expand weekly eTOC alerts with brief summaries. The new editorial team includes executive editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and deputy executive editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, along with 10 deputy editors covering fundamental sciences, translational science, clinical cardiology, clinical trials, community health, population health, global cardiovascular health, and AI for process and science. Maron’s scientific impact includes over 260 publications, six patents, and leadership in federally funded research for over two decades. He discovered novel molecular mechanisms of vascular fibrosis and co-led projects using AI to automate clinical diagnosis.
