Paul Warley, CEO of Ascent Solar Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: ASTI), recently appeared on Benzinga All Access to discuss the company's expansion into the space solar market. Ascent Solar specializes in featherweight, flexible, and durable CIGS thin-film photovoltaic solutions, which Warley says are uniquely suited for space applications.

“What’s exciting about our product is we’re lighter weight than everybody, we are very flexible, you can roll it up and unroll,” Warley told Benzinga. “If you want to move a satellite, you move the satellite easier or if you know there is going to be certain space debris coming, you can roll it up to protect the solar. Also, we're much lighter, so it costs less to put it into space.”

The ability to roll up solar arrays offers a significant advantage in space, where debris and maneuvering are critical concerns. Traditional rigid solar panels are bulky and heavy, increasing launch costs and limiting satellite agility. Ascent Solar's flexible panels can be stowed compactly during launch and deployed once in orbit, and they can be retracted if needed to avoid debris or adjust the satellite's orientation.

Warley emphasized the company's manufacturing readiness as a key differentiator. Ascent Solar has been producing solar solutions for over 15 years and can customize arrays to meet specific customer requirements. This experience gives the company a competitive edge over newer entrants in the space solar market.

The space industry is increasingly turning to lightweight and flexible solar solutions as satellite constellations expand and missions become more ambitious. Ascent Solar's technology addresses the need for cost-effective, reliable power sources that can withstand the harsh conditions of space while minimizing launch weight.

Warley's interview comes as Ascent Solar continues to secure contracts and partnerships in the aerospace sector. The company's CIGS technology offers higher efficiency than traditional silicon-based panels in low-light conditions, making it ideal for deep-space missions where sunlight is less intense.
